Heat Pump Water Heaters to Compare by Published UEF and Warranty

Hybrid electric heat pump water heater lines scored on published Uniform Energy Factor ratings and tank and sealed system warranty length.

Updated August 2026

Scope and methodology

Residential hybrid electric heat pump water heaters from Rheem, A. O. Smith, and Bradford White. Rinnai, Navien, and Noritz do not publish a U.S. residential heat pump water heater and are excluded from this scope.

Brands were scored on the published UEF rating of their heat pump water heater line, the published warranty term on the tank and sealed refrigeration system, and distribution channel, since that determines whether the unit is available at retail or only through a contractor. HomeownerAnswers does not perform hands-on product testing and does not score on reputation, review counts, or customer satisfaction. Scores reflect only what each manufacturer publishes and what independent government or standards-body documentation supports. Ties are broken by the next-highest-weighted criterion, and any remaining tie is listed in rank order alphabetically by brand or option name with the tie disclosed in the entry caveat.

Published UEF rating45%

Uniform Energy Factor rating published for the brand's residential heat pump water heater line.

Published tank and sealed system warranty35%

Length of the published limited warranty on the tank and the sealed heat pump system.

Distribution channel20%

Whether the unit is available at retail, wholesale-only, or both.

The ranking

  1. 1

    Rheem Water Heating

Retail availability with a full published UEF and warranty profile

    Basis
ProTerra publishes the brand's highest UEF ratings among its water heater lines and up to 10 years on the tank and sealed system, available at retail and wholesale.
    Best for
Homeowners who want to see and compare a heat pump water heater at a retail location before buying.
    Caveat
Confirm the published UEF rating and warranty term for the exact ProTerra model and capacity you need.
  2. 2

    A. O. Smith

Retail availability with a comparable published profile

    Basis
Voltex publishes UEF ratings and up to 10 years on the tank for most models, distributed through the same dual retail and wholesale channel as Rheem.
    Best for
Homeowners comparing a second retail and wholesale option against Rheem for the same product category.
    Caveat
Confirm the published UEF rating and warranty term for the exact Voltex model and capacity you need.
  3. 3

    Bradford White

    Wholesale-only heat pump option

    Basis
AeroTherm publishes UEF ratings and up to 10 years on the tank, but is sold exclusively through licensed contractors with no retail purchase path.
    Best for
Homeowners already working with a contractor who carries Bradford White as a primary supply line.
    Caveat
There is no retail list price to compare; installed cost is set entirely by the contractor's quote.

What this ranking does not score

  • Real-world operating cost savings, which depend on local electricity rates, climate, and hot water usage rather than the published UEF alone.
  • Noise level in a real installation, since manufacturer-published sound data is not consistently disclosed across all three brands.
  • Comparative reliability. No independent public dataset supports ranking these brands on that basis.
