Tankless Water Heater Brands to Compare by Published UEF and Warranty

Tankless specialist and generalist brands scored on published Uniform Energy Factor ratings and heat exchanger warranty length.

Updated August 2026

Scope and methodology

Residential gas tankless water heaters from Rheem, A. O. Smith, Rinnai, Navien, and Noritz.

Brands were scored on the highest published UEF rating in their residential tankless lineup, the length of the published heat exchanger warranty (the component most specific to tankless design), and whether the lineup includes a recirculation or combi option that addresses hot water wait time or space heating. Bradford White is not included because it does not publish a residential tankless water heater. HomeownerAnswers does not perform hands-on product testing and does not score on reputation, review counts, or customer satisfaction. Scores reflect only what each manufacturer publishes and what independent government or standards-body documentation supports. Ties are broken by the next-highest-weighted criterion, and any remaining tie is listed in rank order alphabetically by brand or option name with the tie disclosed in the entry caveat.

Published UEF ceiling40%

Highest Uniform Energy Factor rating published for a residential tankless model in the lineup.

Published heat exchanger warranty40%

Length of the published limited warranty specifically on the heat exchanger for residential tankless models.

Added functionality20%

Whether the lineup publishes a built-in recirculation pump or combi (space heating plus water heating) option.

The ranking

  1. 1

    Navien

Longest published heat exchanger term and combi option

    Basis
Publishes up to 15 years on the heat exchanger on select models and is the only brand here with a published combi boiler and water heater product.
    Best for
Homes with hydronic heating that could use a single combi appliance, or homeowners prioritizing the longest published heat exchanger term.
    Caveat
The combi option only applies to homes with or planning hydronic heating; it is not relevant to a standard tank or forced-air setup.
  2. 2

    Rinnai

Recirculation option with strong published heat exchanger term

    Basis
Publishes 10 to 12 years on the heat exchanger and offers the RUR series with a built-in recirculation pump for reduced wait time at distant fixtures.
    Best for
Homes with fixtures far from the water heater where wait time is a common complaint.
    Caveat
Recirculation reduces wait time but does not eliminate the energy cost of running the pump; check the specific model's published specifications.
  3. 3

    Noritz

    Condensing and non-condensing options published

    Basis
Publishes up to 12 years on the heat exchanger for condensing models and is the only brand here also publishing a non-condensing tankless line.
    Best for
Installations where condensing venting is impractical and a non-condensing model is the practical option.
    Caveat
Non-condensing models publish lower UEF ratings than the condensing EZ and NRC series.
  4. 4

    Rheem Water Heating

    Retail and wholesale availability

    Basis
Publishes up to 12 years on the heat exchanger for Prestige tankless models, available through both retail and wholesale unlike the tankless-only specialists.
    Best for
Homeowners who want a tankless option available at a retail counter as well as through a contractor.
    Caveat
Confirm which specific Prestige model and purchase channel the published 12-year term applies to.
  5. 5

    A. O. Smith

    Retail and wholesale availability

    Basis
Publishes up to 12 years on the heat exchanger for ProLine XE tankless models, sold through the same dual retail and wholesale channel as Rheem.
    Best for
Homeowners comparing tankless quotes across both a retail purchase and a contractor-sourced unit.
    Caveat
Confirm the exact heat exchanger term for the specific ProLine XE model quoted.

What this ranking does not score

  • Real-world energy savings in your home, which depends on hot water usage patterns, not just the rated UEF.
  • Installed price, which depends heavily on gas line sizing and venting work required at your home.
  • Comparative failure rates. No independent public dataset supports ranking these brands on that basis.
